Music

I have always had a passion for music, reputedly singing before I could talk, learning piano from age five and joining my first choir at age seven. I started learning the clarinet at age 11 and discovered musical theatre at age 13, leading very music-enriched years at high school and taking part in many vocal, band and theatrical performances.
At the University of Sydney, I joined the Sydney University Musical Society (SUMS), becoming the president in 2000. One of the highlights of the year was performing at the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney Olympic Games (along with hundreds of other singers). I also co-founded MUSE (Music Theatre Ensemble of the University of Sydney) in 2002.
After some quiet musical years with more of a focus on my PhD and then my children, I started up a couple of musical groups. One thing led to another, and now I'm in the process of releasing my first solo album as Isabel Palethorpe. If you want to find out more, you can visit my website, Spotify artist page and YouTube channel.
I founded the Challis Singers in 2012 and currently act as the Musical Director and Chairperson. The Challis Singers is a non-auditioned community choir based in Turramurra; you can find their website here.
In 2003, along with my husband Hugh and friends Bonnie Mackinnon and Greg Taylor, I formed vocal quartet Sass & Grit. We sing light jazz and popular music in 4-part a cappella harmonies. Our first EP of cover songs is available online or through your favourite streaming service, and our second EP of original songs is in the process of being released online, with a CD launch planned for mid-2021. Follow us on Facebook or Instagram to hear about upcoming performances and releases, or check out our website here to book us for a performance.
I am also a member of Celtic folk group Adder’s Fork, along with Bonnie Mackinnon, Nori Saito and Emily Palethorpe. A blend of acoustic guitar, piano, recorder, cello, clarinet, drums and vocals, we perform a mix of familiar songs and originals, often featuring magical tales or historical stories. We have released one EP (Adder’s Eggs) and have a second in production, with two songs already released online.
